About

The Historic Preservation Commission (HPC) works to identify, protect, and celebrate the historic resources that tell the story of Calhoun’s past and shape its future. Serving the entire City of Calhoun, the Commission helps ensure that historic places—buildings, sites, and districts—are thoughtfully preserved and responsibly managed for the benefit of the community.

City-wide, the HPC reviews changes to designated historic properties and districts, provides guidance on preservation best practices, and promotes awareness of Calhoun’s architectural and cultural heritage. This work helps protect the character of historic neighborhoods, landmarks, and sites while supporting appropriate growth and reinvestment.

In Downtown Calhoun, historic preservation is a cornerstone of the Georgia Main Street and Main Street America approach. The HPC plays a key role in maintaining the integrity of the Downtown Historic District by supporting sensitive rehabilitation, compatible new development, and design standards that honor the district’s historic character. Preservation in downtown is not about freezing buildings in time—it is about keeping them useful, economically viable, and connected to modern community life.

In addition to downtown, the HPC oversees two other locally designated historic districts: the Colbert “Calvary” Cemetery and the Stephens School Campus. These districts represent important chapters of Calhoun’s history, and the Commission works to ensure they are preserved with care, dignity, and respect.

Through education, design review, and collaboration with property owners, city staff, and community partners, the Historic Preservation Commission helps safeguard Calhoun’s historic places while supporting a vibrant, livable city—where history is not only remembered, but actively woven into everyday life.

Why Preservation Matters

Historic preservation protects what makes Calhoun unique. By caring for historic places, we strengthen the local economy, support small businesses, and guide growth in a way that honors our past while building a vibrant future.

Downtown Calhoun Historic District

A significant achievement of the HPC is the successful listing of the Downtown Calhoun Historic District on the National Register of Historic Places in 2011. This designation recognizes the area's historical and architectural significance, encompassing approximately 22 acres in the heart of Calhoun. The district is centered along Wall Street, extending from Line Street on the north to Hicks Street on the south, and from Piedmont Street on the east to the railroad on the west.

The district includes 44 contributing buildings and 12 non-contributing ones, showcasing architectural styles such as Late 19th and 20th Century Revivals and Italianate. Notable structures within the district include the old U.S. Post Office building and the Gordon County Courthouse.

The HPC continues to strive to preserve the rich heritage of the City of Calhoun ensuring that the historical character of areas like the Downtown Calhoun Historic District is maintained for future generations.
